OC Turkish School - Children’s Day Celebration Report

Orange County Turkish School celebrated its second Children’s Day festivities on April 26th, 2008 with the attendance of more than 150 guests.

Semrin Aleckson and Melis Kocyigit, who were the co-presenters of the program, welcomed guests with the following opening remarks: “Today, we will remember and honor the founder of Turkish Republic and his legacy. Once again, we thank him for leading us to enlightenment and paving the road to democracy.” The event continued with singing of the Turkish National Anthem with participation from the audience followed by Deniz Bora Barnar leading our students’ reciting the Türk Andı.

OCTAA community celebrated 19 Mayis Atatürk’ü Anma, Genclik ve Spor Bayrami (May 19th Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day) and Memorial Day at the beautiful Colonel Bill Barber Park in Irvine on May 18. Warm weather did not stop 150 guests who joined together and celebrated our rich culture and heritage at our fourth annual picnic event.

OC Turkish School - Children’s Day Celebration Report

Orange County Turkish School celebrated its first Children’s Day festivities on April 21st, 2007 at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center in Irvine, California. More than 100 guests attended this joyful event.

Program began with co-presenters Cenap Biyikli’s and Melis Kocyigit’s welcoming remarks. Melis opened the festivities with a famous quote by Ataturk "To see me does not necessarily mean to see my face. To understand my thoughts is to have seen me...” The event continued with singing the Turkish National Anthem with participation from the audience followed by students’ saying the Türk Andı, a recitation that is similar to the “US Pledge of Allegience.” The program continued with our School Director Aysu Tazebay’s presentation on Ataturk’s address to the youth, his love for children, school’s mission and background, and the meaning of April 23rd Children’s Day. She completed her presentation by thanking all of the volunteers, students, parents and the sponsors for their invaluable contributions to the event.

On a beautiful Saturday recently, the Orange County Turkish American Association supported a fantastic philanthropy organized by the ladies of Pi Beta Phi at UC Irvine called ArrowDaze. This all-day speed soccer tournament was held on May 13th at the Anteater Recreation Center fields at UCI.
